She worked in the NHS in a multi-professional Child and Adolescent Mental Health Team, and as an independent practitioner in various settings. An experienced trainer, she gave regular training to Autism West Midlands, nasen, Resources for Autism, Language for Learning, specialist teachers, parents and other professionals throughout the country.

MSc in Speech and Language Therapy and Pathology, University College London, which gave access to centres of excellence such as Great Ormond Street Hospital, the Michael Palin Centre for Stammering and Camden’s Parent Child Interaction.

BA (magna cum laude) in English, University of Oregon, which gave an interest in language and the interaction amongst people.

A business background, which ensured an excellent service to clients and their families.

Member of the RCSLT, HPC and ASLTIP.

Therapy

I have a wide range of clients who receive ongoing therapy. This regular input allows me to get to know my clients well and enables me to tailor the therapy as needs change. Therapy is provided for speech, language and social skills. My clients range in age from 4 to adults.

Therapy is interactive. Like all therapists I believe in making the therapy as enjoyable as possible, and my clients have fun. I make my therapeutic techniques as moveable (kinaesthetic) as possible to accommodate different learning styles. Therapeutic intervention often includes group work with matched peers to help build social interactions. This has proven to be highly successful, and has even led to friendships between clients.

There is a growing desire for people to make different choices about the intervention or therapy received from a speech and language therapist. If a client is receiving therapy from an NHS therapist, I will liaise to ensure that all therapies are cohesive. Ongoing reports can be provided, and it is hoped that these will be passed on to any appropriate professional, school setting or care facility.

Therapy helps:

Speech: to become clearer

Language: understanding and use of words and sentences

Narrative: to put together stories, including personal experiences of the client

Social skills: by incorporating experiences unique to the client to teach interaction strategies; focus can include developing friendships

Phonology: which goes on to develop literacy skills

Emotional and behavioural: developing an emotional understanding to help make better behavioural choices

Therapy took place in Birmingham (near Cadbury’s), at the client’s home, or at a school or care facility.

Assessment

Assessments can be undertaken for both children and adults. I am an experienced diagnostician and am skilled at differential diagnosis. I regularly participate in multi-professional diagnosis. A diagnostic assessment can take a number of sessions and will require liaison with other professionals.

In addition, I gladly do assessments of needs and strengths. These assessments evaluate speech, language and social skills. The results are then used to inform therapeutic decisions, and a report of abilities can be compiled.

Assessments include formal tools which provide a set of scores that enable peer comparison. These results can be used in conjunction with the assessment findings of other professionals, such as psychologists. A range of other, less formal assessment tools are used to gather useful information about pragmatic skills. Assessments often include observations in social, school or home settings.

Training

I am a skilled trainer. My enthusiasm is contagious. You will learn a lot, but with a smile on your face. The training sessions are practical, practical and practical. I like to explain theory in an accessible, “easy to understand” manner, and trainings are full of useful information from my own clinical experiences. But the focus is always on the practical.

“Very useful. I can use many ideas in my practice. Also able to pass on some ideas to parents. Thanks for making the day so interesting and informative.”

“The day was great — really relevant materials presented excellently — a good laugh.”

“Some excellent strategies for me to try at home. Very informative. Helped explain some issues at a deeper level.”

Comments from training sessions

Training is becoming increasingly necessary as more complex clients are being included in various settings, which means professionals must constantly improve their skills. I provide frequent training courses through various organisations, and I often develop bespoke training that addresses the specific issues of the participants. It has proven beneficial when members of the same family or organisation speak the same “language.” Training for parents of children with special needs is a growing opportunity, and I offer regular training for parents.

Training topics

Social Stories. A highly successful, practical workshop to teach you how to write a social story. Social stories (developed by Carol Gray) can be used to help change a behaviour. They can also be used to prepare for change or transitions. My technique is creative and unusual. It is fun for both the client and the person writing the story. My training comes from my own clinical practice, where I have successfully used the technique to change the lives of clients.

Comic Strip Conversations. This Carol Gray technique is client-led. It helps to understand some of the nuances of interactions, then goes further to help with understanding emotions. The colourful technique then provides a language that can be used for future discussions. It never fails to teach the “professional” about what the client is thinking.

Social Stories and Comic Strip Conversations. It has proven successful to do a half-day workshop on Social Stories, then have a break for two weeks while the social story is implemented. When you return you can seek advice on the use of the social story before moving on to a practical session on Comic Strip Conversations.

Social Intelligence. This course is full of practical ideas on how to help teach social intelligence. There is lots of focus on the teaching of empathy, or perspective taking, which when impaired can drastically affect social interaction.

Differentiating the Curriculum. This course is designed for teachers. It is divided into a few areas which can then help a teacher differentiate for a whole class. The techniques are practical but not impossible.

“I’m a teaching assistant — help me differentiate the curriculum.” This course has been run at all levels of education and is designed to give a hands-on experience of making a lesson more tangible to a young person with language difficulties. The course is also called “Thinking Pages,” as the key is to provide a visual tool for a young person to use to access the lesson, and also for future revision.

Communication for People on the Autistic Spectrum. This training is a regular part of the Autism West Midlands modular course. Although it is mostly theoretical, you will go away with some new and practical ideas of how to interact with others.

Other training: speech difficulties and how they can affect literacy; language delay vs disorder, and what can I do about it; behavioural issues and emotional development; how to use play skills to develop a social understanding.

What clients said

“Our son, aged 9, is diagnosed with Asperger’s Syndrome. However, socially he can get things very ‘off mainstream.’ Shauna works with his communication skills — both how he perceives communication and how others interpret him. Over the three years of working with Shauna we have worked on making good choices in situations, how to get out of loops, how to hold a conversation and stay on point, idioms, and much much more. My husband and I have benefited as much as our son and Shauna has become an extension to our family unit.”

A parent, July 2010

“My daughter who has an autistic spectrum disorder enjoys her sessions with Shauna. When the sessions started I indicated to Shauna various problems which might be tackled by social stories and she has provided social stories to help with some of these problems at a pace my daughter can cope with — e.g. my daughter is frightened of loud noises, so we have a story which reiterates that ‘loud noises never hurt me.’ Among other things, Shauna also works on holding conversations in an appropriate way, and speaking at the right tempo and volume. Any progress is slow but worthwhile.”

A parent, July 2010

“Working with Shauna is good because she helps me to make some files in my brain. She’s always cheerful.”

A client, June 2010

“My son is 17 years old and he has Autistic Spectrum Disorder with communication difficulties. He has been seeing Shauna in the past couple of years. As with all autistic children, my son has his ups and downs but Shauna has always been very supportive and never has she raised her voice or lose her patience with him. I am very sceptical about all the ‘cures’ and ‘therapies’ on offer for children with autism which sometimes lure parents into putting their child or even the whole family into guinea pigs with no real benefits, but I am a firm believer that with the input of a good Speech and Language Therapist, some aspects of autism can be better managed, and Shauna is one of them.”

A parent, June 2010

And two letters in clients’ own hands:

From 2007 until she retired, Shauna ran SaLTworks, an independent speech and language therapy practice in Birmingham.
